Chicago: History-filled places to see, The Off-beat, Hauntings, True Crime, Gangsters, etc.?
Q. A friend & I are going to Chicago & we've never been there. We love history- the weirder, the better, and we'd like to focus our trip around off-beat places to explore. It seems there is so much in Chicago regarding its mobster history and so-called "hauntings", that we're not sure which places are the best to visit. We're cemetary buffs, as well, and if there's anything to do that is strange like touring a deserted prison (not sure if the one I'm thinking of is in Chicago or not..).. well, you get the drift.. Please answer if you know of something we might like to do while in Chicago, and explain a bit about it. I'm doing searches myself, but I just don't know where to focus yet. Thanks a lot! We tend to skip over museums unless… [cont.]

A. Check out the Chicago historical society for haunting tours or cemetary tours. I know there is a tour company that specializes in the haunted history. I think it is called Chicago hauntings and it is a 3 hour bus tour.

Does Anybody Know This Number?
Q. Austin, Michaela, and Nicky, my friends, and I were googling hauntings in places and how to know if you are haunted or such. We came across a number, and read above it that if you call only on the hours of early 12 and 1, that you can hear a woman screaming for help. Any other daylight hours, the number becomes busy. I wanted to try out that number, and therefore, I cannot find it. Can anyone help me out?

Q. I lost my wife of 15 years, 2 years ago. Since that time we have had many strange occurances in our home. We remodeled and had a fire. All rights the fire should have destroyed the entire home. But it simply scorched a interior garage wall. Lights turn on and off without a switch being used. Shadows in places there is no way to exist. My childrens health has "ALWAYS" been poor. Yet the last 2 years has remained very good. Items left in 1 place are lost, only to be found in the same place in our home she kept them. The most disturbing is the phone calls. A. First of all, the obvious possibilities are electrical problems (eg, wiring) and passing cars forming shadows with thier headlights. The mundane being said, I would make three guesses at the nature of any spirits. One is, a deceased relative of your wife has been called upon by your wife to look after you. It could also be an immortal spirit (angel, nymph, faerie, etc) that feels bad for you and is trying desperately to comfort you. And, of course, it could be your wife's disembodied spirit. What3ver it is, embrace it, talk to it, enjoy its companionship and protection. Would that we were all as lucky as you to have a life-partner who looks out for us from the other side!

Anyone know a good ghost/hauntings website?
Q. I'm fascinated with ghost pictures and reading different supposedly true stories, so if you know a good website with things like that, that'd be great. Or even better...a website that will list different places (with stories and info) you can actually go to that are said to be haunted. I love going "ghost-hunting" and just seeing places that are supposedly haunted.

Hauntings... What is classified as a haunting? School speech HELP!!!?
Q. I have to do an informative speech and mine is over hauntings i need to know websites that have info on them and also need to know what constitutes a place as "haunted." Do they have to meet certain requirements? Who deems them officially haunted? What equipment is used? etc. Thank you!

A. there are tons of websites - try Ghost Hunters for one. A haunting is a paranormal event that is measurable and witnessed by more than one individual. Hauntings can be atmospheric, physical and/or audible. Tools would include heat sensors, infrared cameras, air density monitors, digital video and digital audio recorders, portable monitors, etc... There's a ton of info out there...surf. :)

WHY does the Ouija board move in a "figure 8" fashion??
Q. I will clarify one important thing: i do not use that board anymore. HOWEVER many many yrs. ago, some relatives of mine and I used it and had very strange things happen, but way too much to write about here. I'm trying to put peice by peice together to understand as much as I can as to what had happened to us {family of 4} many many yrs ago this question isn'T for "sceptics" I NEED experienced ppl who've done the ouija/had actual hauntings take place/bizarre things happen afterwards ... why did the ouija go {keep goin in a figure 8???} I still remember that, at the time we were all laughing at the time, but it turned out not to be so funny next important question--what did it mean when one of the person's hand kept GOING UP/holding up… [cont.]

A. maybe it wasn't the number 8, but the infinite symbol? i used to play the board in elementary school.. what was weird was that if we asked questions, it would read my mind and spell out what i was thinking. maybe someone was thinking '8'? hmmm. i forgot to mention, please do not play this game anymore.. i've heard some scary stories from honest people. my friend in elementary tried to throw hers out but it managed to make it to her towel closet. it can haunt people's lives & the spirits lie a lot.. sorry.. be careful please.

Hauntings and wierd stuff accosiated w/ Hyatt property build over Heiau and ancient burial site, why?
Q. The Hyatt is the best place besides Marriot and Princeville but also the most haunted I heard that a Heiau is some kind of spiritual portal, one hippie I met in Kauai claims that he slept in one with a sleeping bag and later he woke up to find himself paralyzed and being dragged outside his body by a strong unseen entity. He was lucky to fight it off and manage to fit himself back into his physical body. I don't know whether his story is true or not but why would he lie to me about his experience. I went with some friends to poipu glof course on a full moon night and I witnessed a soldier apparition (only partly materialized) chase after me near the Heiau (most frightening experience of my life) true story, I'm not crazy. Other people… [cont.]

A. A heiau is a temple, not a spiritual portal like the hippie told you. In ancient Hawaii there were many different types of heiau. Some plots of land where heiaus used to be are now preserved sites. The reason why The Hyatt is haunted is because it's built on ancient burial grounds, which are kapu (forbidden) for anyone to tread onto. As for the "soldier" you saw...I was gonna say that it was a nightmarcher, but that can't be it because Poipu isn't a place where the nightmarchers go. This one is a mystery to me. But the nightmarchers do march on certain nights, including full moons so...hmm, not sure.

My mother in law's home was built on an old pecan grove where slaves were hung and i never believed her home was hunted until i say it for myself. Me and her were sitting in her living room when her dinning room table (made of glass) broke right down the center, like someone had cut it. It didn't shatter but was just clean cut down the middle. Ever since then i have believed. Keep in mind no one had touched the table, nothing was on it, it was just there.

Does a lot of so called paranormal activity tend to happen on the highest floor?
Q. I watch Ghost Hunters (TAPS - The Atlantic Paranormal Society) and when they investigate a place with possible hauntings it can happen anywhere. Please let me explain my situation at work: I work graveyards at a seniors assisted living complex alternatively with day shifts. For some strange reason during the day light hours there is no problem to go up to the 3rd floor. After midnight, me as housekeeper and the my partner the Care Aid go up together to the 3rd floor to clean the bathrooms, remove garbage and perform basic janitorial. No one wants to go up there unaccompanied by themselves. Too many stories to share on that one.. We have never told any new employees about this situation. But they all experience the same paranoia… [cont.]

A. Radio Jingles,I also watch each and every show that has to deal with the paranormal.I have had several experiences over my life time.My opinion is that paranormal activity can happen at any given time.I am aware of the EMF's.They say that this helps a spirit to manifest it's self.Spirits can travel any where.Often they will hide out in attics or basements or even closets.I think that the best way to see if this upstairs has high EMF's would be to get a detector. They do say that high EMF's can make a person feel paranoid and like they are being watched. They can also cause headaches, skin irritations and even hallucinations as well and nausea. Some people are highly sensitive to these fields than others.

A. The Museum near the YWCA is supposedly haunted. I think of any more in Bangor, But up near Kennebunk Port, Their is a few haunted hotels...Probley not what you mean by haunted, but in Bucksport(Which is close to Bangor.) is captain Buck's tombstone...To make the legend short: He feel in love with a A witch, Left her for another women, and the witch said that she would dance on his tombstone...Ever since then and a few tombstones later, The foot has appeared on every tombstone since then...and the foot is still they're.

California Hauntings?
Q. I'm from Texas and we have our fare share of haunted areas like the Alamo, so I was just wondering what famous haunted places existed here in California. I'm in LA in the San Fernando Valley, but it doesn't matter where they are, just curious!

A. In Southern California, I'd say the Queen Mary (Long Beach) takes the cake. It was a troop ship during the war. Rumors are rife about paranormal activity - time travel and the like - when it crossed the Bermuda Triangle. These stories actually became the basis for an X-Files episode. There have been several deadly accidents since it was moved to California and became a tourist attraction, which has only added to the creepy reputation. --- In Northern California, Winchester Mystery House (San Jose) and Alcatraz (San Francisco) are supposedly haunted as well. Sarah Winchester, the widow of gun magnate William Wirt Winchester, believed that victims of the company's "products" were trying to kill her. So, she had full of false doors… [cont.]
